Google product taxonomy: every category with its ID

The Google product taxonomy is the fixed list of 5,595 categories that Google Shopping and Microsoft Advertising accept in google_product_category, each identified by a numeric ID. It has 21 top-level categories; every one is listed below with its branches, and each branch links to a page listing every category beneath it.

Know what you sell but not where it lives? Search all 5595 categories at once with the Google product category finder.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this list come from?

From the taxonomy file Google publishes for Merchant Center, with IDs, loaded into this site rather than retyped. The version date is shown at the bottom of every category page.

Should I submit the ID or the category path?

The ID. Google accepts either, but the ID is shorter, unambiguous and unaffected by wording changes in the path.

Is google_product_category required?

Not any more. Google assigns a category automatically when you leave it out, but submitting one is still worthwhile where the automatic choice is wrong, and the category you choose decides which vertical attributes, such as colour and size for apparel, become required.

What is the difference between google_product_category and product_type?

google_product_category must be a value from this fixed taxonomy. product_type is free text for your own category structure, which is useful for campaign structure and reporting but does not tell Google what the product is.
