Feed error

Item disapproved

Image too small

The "Image too small" issue means the file at image_link is below the channel's minimum pixel dimensions, so the item is disapproved. On Shopify the original upload is rarely the problem: the feed usually points at a resized CDN copy or a small legacy, supplier or swatch image.

Why it happens on Shopify

The feed links to a resized copy rather than the original

Shopify serves every image through its CDN and can return a smaller rendition of the same file when the URL asks for one. A feed built from theme output or a thumbnail URL submits that small rendition, even though the full-size original is sitting in the product.

The original upload is genuinely small

Images carried over from an older platform, scraped from a supplier site or exported as web thumbnails years ago are often only a few hundred pixels across. No URL change can recover detail that was never in the file.

A swatch or detail image is used as the variant image

Some stores attach a small colour swatch or fabric close-up to each variant. A feed that prefers the variant image then submits the swatch as the main product image for every row.

Images pass the old minimum but not the new one

Google is raising the minimum to 500 x 500 pixels for all products, enforced from 31 January 2027. Until then, images that meet the current minimum but fall short of 500 x 500 are flagged with an "upcoming enforcement" warning rather than a disapproval.

How to fix it

  1. Check the real dimensions of the submitted file

Open the exact URL from the feed, not the product page, and check its pixel size. If it is small but the image in the Shopify admin is large, the problem is the URL the feed uses rather than the photography.

  2. Point image_link at the full-size original

Strip size parameters and thumbnail suffixes so the feed submits the original Shopify CDN file. This one mapping change usually clears most of the affected items at once.

  3. Replace images that are small at source

Request originals from the supplier or reshoot. Google advises against submitting scaled-up images, because enlarging a small file adds pixels without adding detail, and recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or more for best results.

  4. Keep swatches out of the main image slot

Where variants carry swatch images, fall back to the product's featured image or choose the first full-size image instead. Submit the remaining product shots as additional images rather than as the main one.

  5. Clear the upcoming enforcement warnings now

Filter the issues for "Image too small for upcoming enforcement" and treat them as a deadline. Items that only meet the current minimum will be disapproved once the 500 x 500 rule is enforced.

How feedlab handles this

feedlab maps image_link from the original Shopify image rather than a theme thumbnail, and a conditional rule can skip swatch-sized variant images in favour of the product's featured image. The rule preview shows which image each variant resolves to against your real catalogue before the feed is published.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum image size for Google Shopping?

Currently 100 x 100 pixels for most products and 250 x 250 pixels for apparel. Google is raising the minimum to 500 x 500 pixels for all products, enforced from 31 January 2027, and recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or larger for best performance.

Can I just upscale my small images?

Google specifically advises against scaled-up images. Enlarging a file meets the pixel count without adding real detail, so the image still looks poor. Sourcing the original or reshooting is the proper fix.

My Shopify images are large. Why are they flagged as too small?

Because the feed is probably submitting a resized CDN rendition rather than the original file. Check the exact URL in the feed; if it carries a size parameter or thumbnail suffix, map image_link to the full-size image instead.
