Feed error
Item disapprovedGeneric image
The "Generic image" issue means the main image is a placeholder, logo or graphic that does not show the actual product, so the item is disapproved. On Shopify it usually comes from products created without photos, where a theme, app or import filled the gap with a "no image available" graphic or the store logo.

Why it happens on Shopify
A placeholder was uploaded in place of a photo
Products created before photography is ready often get a "coming soon" or "no image available" graphic so the listing looks complete. The file is valid and fetches correctly, and is then rejected on its content.
The store logo is used as a fallback
Some feed setups and apps substitute the shop logo when a product has no image of its own, to avoid an empty image_link. Logos count as generic images.
A supplier or import supplied a stock graphic
Supplier sheets and dropshipping imports sometimes carry the same category illustration or brand banner for many products rather than a photograph of each item.
One image is reused across unrelated products
A shared lifestyle shot or category banner attached to many products shows none of them specifically, and reads as generic rather than as a product image.
How to fix it
-
Find which image URLs repeat across products
Group the feed by image_link. A single URL attached to dozens of unrelated products is almost always the placeholder or logo, and it identifies every affected item at once.
-
Replace the placeholder with a real product photo
Upload a photograph of the actual item to the product in Shopify. This is the only fix that resolves the disapproval, because the rule is about what the image shows.
-
Exclude products that have no real image yet
A product without a photograph is better left out of the feed until it has one. Submitting it with a placeholder only produces a disapproval and adds noise to the diagnostics.
-
Remove logo fallbacks from the feed mapping
If image_link falls back to the store logo or a default graphic, remove that fallback. An excluded product is easier to manage than a disapproved one.
-
Submit the new image under a new URL
Google notes that changing the image URL, rather than overwriting the file at the same address, speeds up how quickly the new image is fetched. Uploading a new image in Shopify produces a new CDN URL anyway.
How feedlab handles this
feedlab can apply a conditional rule that excludes products whose image matches a known placeholder or logo, or that have no image at all, instead of submitting them with a fallback graphic. The rule preview lists exactly which products are held back against your real catalogue, and validation before publish catches empty image values.
Frequently asked questions
Does my store logo count as a generic image?
Yes. Google lists logos alongside "No image available" graphics as generic images that cannot be used as the main product image. The main image has to show the product being sold.
Are generic images ever allowed?
Google allows them for a small number of categories where a product photo is not meaningful, such as Hardware, Vehicles & Parts and computer software. For everything else, the main image must show the actual item.
Should I list a product before its photos are ready?
It is better to leave it out of the feed until it has a real image. A placeholder only gets the item disapproved, so it adds nothing over waiting and clutters your diagnostics in the meantime.
Related errors
- Image link cannot be crawled An image crawl failure means the channel could not retrieve the file at image_link, or retrieved it and judged it unusable. On Shopify the URL itself is rarely wrong, so the cause is usually a rate limit hit during a first full crawl, a temporary CDN response, or an image whose content breaks policy rather than one that is genuinely missing.
- Image too small The "Image too small" issue means the file at image_link is below the channel's minimum pixel dimensions, so the item is disapproved. On Shopify the original upload is rarely the problem: the feed usually points at a resized CDN copy or a small legacy, supplier or swatch image.
- Promotional overlay on image The "Promotional overlay on image" issue means the main image carries added text, badges, logos or watermarks, so the item is disapproved. On Shopify it usually means sale badges or brand marks were baked into the image file itself, or supplier photos arrived with watermarks or promotional text already applied.
