Feed error
WarningText too long: title
The "Text too long [title]" warning means a product title is longer than the 150 characters Google accepts, so it is cut off. On Shopify it usually happens when a feed appends variant options, vendor and keywords to an already long product title, or when an SEO title is used as the feed title.

Why it happens on Shopify
Variant options are appended to a long product title
Adding colour, size and material to the title is good practice for variant-level feeds, but on a product title that is already long the combined string passes 150 characters for the longest variants only, which is why the issue often hits a subset.
A title template concatenates too many fields
Templates such as brand plus title plus product type plus all options plus a keyword phrase produce titles whose length depends on the product. Nothing caps the result unless the feed does it.
The Shopify SEO title or a description excerpt is used
Meta titles and opening lines of descriptions are written for different limits and often include store names or marketing copy, which pushes them past the feed limit and adds text Google asks you not to put in titles.
Supplier titles are imported verbatim
Supplier and marketplace titles are often stuffed with every attribute and compatible model. Imported into Shopify unchanged, they arrive in the feed far beyond 150 characters.
How to fix it
-
Measure titles as the feed submits them
Check length on the generated feed value rather than the Shopify product title, because options and prefixes are added during generation. Sort by length to see how many items exceed 150 characters.
-
Put the important words first
Google shows roughly the first 70 characters in most placements and recommends keeping titles around that length where possible. Lead with product type, brand and the distinguishing attribute, then add detail.
-
Trim at a word boundary rather than mid-word
Where a template can exceed the limit, cap the result at 150 characters by dropping the least important trailing segment, rather than letting Google cut the string at an arbitrary point.
-
Remove text that belongs in other attributes
Prices, sale wording, shipping details and the store name should not be in titles. Removing them shortens titles and avoids separate editorial issues at the same time.
-
Fix the worst offenders at the source
For imported supplier titles, rewriting the Shopify product title once is cleaner than maintaining feed-side exceptions for each product.
How feedlab handles this
feedlab builds titles with transformation rules that can combine fields conditionally and cap the result at a word boundary, so long product names drop optional segments instead of being truncated. The rule preview shows the generated title for every variant in the real catalogue, and validation before publish flags any that still exceed 150 characters.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum title length for Google Shopping?
The title attribute accepts up to 150 characters. Google only shows around the first 70 in Shopping ads and free listings, so it recommends putting the most important details first.
Will a title over 150 characters get my product disapproved?
Google truncates titles over the limit and reports a warning rather than disapproving them. The cut-off can still remove useful words or end mid-phrase, so it is worth fixing.
Should I shorten all my titles to 70 characters?
Google recommends around 70 characters or fewer where possible, because that is roughly what Shopping ads and free listings display. Its title guidance also encourages using the available space for distinguishing details, so the practical rule is key information first and never more than 150 characters.
Related errors
- Excessive capitalization The "Excessive capitalization [title]" issue means Google's editorial checks found too much capitalised text in a product title, such as all-caps words used for emphasis. On Shopify it usually comes from supplier titles in capitals, upper-case vendor names or promotional words like NEW or SALE.
- Duplicate product id A duplicate id error means two or more rows in a feed claim the same identifier, so the channel cannot tell which one describes the item and keeps only the last it processed. On Shopify it usually means the feed was built per product rather than per variant, or that a SKU used as the id is blank or reused across variants.
