Item disapprovedIncorrect value: Google product category
An incorrect or invalid google_product_category value means the category you submitted does not match an entry in Google's product taxonomy, so it is rejected. On Shopify it usually comes from passing a Shopify category, a collection name or only the last segment of a Google category path.
How this appears in your account

Why it happens on Shopify
Only the last segment of the path was submitted
Google accepts either the numeric ID or the full category path. A value such as "Tuxedos" on its own is rejected, even though it is the last part of a valid path.
A Shopify category or collection was mapped directly
Shopify's own product taxonomy and its collections are not Google's taxonomy. Passing the Shopify category name or ID, a product type or a collection title into google_product_category produces values that match nothing in Google's list. Shop-specific categories belong in product_type instead.
The path is mistyped, translated or escaped wrongly
A full path has to match the taxonomy exactly, including the separators. A category typed by hand, translated into a language the taxonomy is not used in, or with an unescaped ampersand in an XML feed fails to match.
A valid category that does not fit the product
Google checks that the category matches the offer. Some categories carry their own requirements, for example alcoholic beverages, phones sold on contract or gift cards, and products placed in the wrong branch can be disapproved for not meeting them.
How to fix it
-
List the values that failed
Filter Needs attention in Merchant Center for the category issue and download the affected products. Grouping them by the submitted value usually shows a handful of bad values repeated across many products, which is far quicker to fix than product by product.
-
Look up the correct ID for each value
Find the right category in Google's taxonomy and use its numeric ID, which avoids spelling, language and escaping problems entirely. The full taxonomy with IDs is browsable at /tools/google-product-category on feedlab, and the finder at /tools/google-product-category-finder searches it by keyword and returns the numeric ID.
-
Map the category at the right level
Set the category per product type or per tag rather than by one global value, so a store selling both apparel and accessories does not push everything into one branch. Keep your own category names in product_type, which accepts any value.
-
Remove the attribute where nothing fits
google_product_category is optional, and Google assigns a category to every product automatically from its title, description, price, brand and GTIN. If you cannot find a matching category, leaving the attribute out is better than submitting an invalid one.
-
Resubmit and allow time to clear
Update the feed or the product in Merchant Center. Google notes that changes can take 24 to 72 hours to show on the Needs attention page.
How feedlab handles this
feedlab sets google_product_category through conditional rules on product type, tag or metafield, so each rule resolves to a single taxonomy ID rather than free text. Validation before publish and the rule preview show which category each product receives against your real catalogue, so a bad value is caught before the channel sees it.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the category ID or the full path?
Either is accepted, but not both in the same value. The numeric ID is the safer choice because it does not depend on spelling, language or escaping.
Is google_product_category required?
No. Google assigns every product a category automatically. Providing it is useful when the automatic category is wrong, when you want to segment campaigns by category, or for categories with specific requirements such as alcohol.
Can I use my Shopify product category?
Not directly. Shopify's category values are not Google taxonomy IDs or paths, so they need to be translated to the matching Google category first. Your own category names can go in product_type instead.
Related errors
- Missing value: gender The "Missing value [gender]" issue means an apparel item was submitted without saying who it is for. Shopify has no gender field on products, so the information usually lives only in a collection, a tag or the title, and the feed sends nothing unless gender is mapped from one of those deliberately.
- Missing value: age group The "Missing value [age_group]" issue means an apparel item was submitted without saying whether it is for adults, kids or babies. Shopify has no age group field, so stores that sell mainly adult clothing rarely record it anywhere and the feed sends nothing unless a rule supplies it.
- Missing value: color The "Missing value [color]" issue means an apparel item reached Merchant Center without the colour attribute it requires. On Shopify the colour usually exists, but as a variant option or in the product title rather than a dedicated field, so a feed that does not map the option explicitly leaves color empty.
- Personalized advertising policy violation A "Personalized advertising policy violation" means Google classed a product as belonging to a sensitive category, such as health or sexual interests. It restricts audience targeting like remarketing and Customer Match rather than removing the product. Shopify stores selling wellness or intimate products see it most.
