# Personalized advertising policy violation

A "Personalized advertising policy violation" means Google classed a product as belonging to a sensitive category, such as health or sexual interests. It restricts audience targeting like remarketing and Customer Match rather than removing the product. Shopify stores selling wellness or intimate products see it most.

## How this appears in your account

- `Personalized advertising policy violation`
- `Restricted targeting in Personalized advertising`
- `Personalized advertising: sexual interests`
- `Personalized advertising: personal hardships`

## Why it happens on Shopify

### The product genuinely falls in a sensitive interest category

Google's policy lists sensitive categories including health, sexual interests, personal hardships such as relationship or financial difficulties, and identity and belief. Products in these areas cannot be targeted using advertiser-curated audiences, whatever the campaign settings say.

### Health or intimate wording in the title or description

Google classifies products largely from their text. Descriptions that mention medical conditions, intimate areas or treatments pull a product into the health or sexual interests category, which is common on Shopify wellness and personal care stores.

### The product category points at a sensitive area

An explicit google_product_category in a health or adult branch signals the sensitive category directly. A category chosen by a broad mapping rule, rather than per product, can put harmless items there.

### The classification is wrong

Automated classification makes mistakes, and products with ambiguous names are sometimes flagged for a category they have nothing to do with. Merchant Center does not say which word or signal caused the flag.

## How to fix it

1. **Confirm what the restriction actually limits** — The product can still serve; what changes is targeting. Under the policy, sensitive categories cannot use advertiser-curated audiences such as your own data segments for remarketing, Customer Match or lookalike segments, while predefined Google audiences and contextual targeting remain available. Demand Gen campaigns, which use advertiser-curated audiences by default, may be restricted from serving.
2. **Check whether the classification is correct** — Read the flagged products as Google would. If they really are health, sexual wellness or hardship-related products, the restriction is the policy working as intended and there is nothing to fix in the data. If they are not, the flag is a classification error.
3. **Correct misleading text and category on wrongly flagged products** — Where wording suggests a sensitive meaning the product does not have, rewrite the title and description in Shopify so both the product page and the feed change, and check the google_product_category is the right branch. Do not rephrase genuinely sensitive products to avoid classification; that is evasion, not a fix.
4. **Separate affected products in your campaigns** — Put a custom label on the sensitive products and give them their own campaign or asset group without audience lists, so remarketing campaigns for the rest of the catalogue keep working. Expect remarketing campaigns built around these products to reach fewer people.
5. **Appeal genuine mistakes** — If the products are clearly outside the sensitive categories after your review, use the option to disagree with the issue in Merchant Center, or appeal from the affected ads in Google Ads, and explain what the product actually is.

## How feedlab handles this

feedlab can set a custom label conditionally from a tag, type or metafield, so sensitive products are segmented in your campaigns automatically rather than by hand. The rule preview shows which products the condition matches against your real catalogue, and the label is kept current on every scheduled publish as the catalogue changes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are my products disapproved?

No. The policy restricts how products in sensitive categories can be targeted, not whether they can be shown. They can still serve through Shopping ads using Google's own and contextual targeting, but not to advertiser-curated audiences such as remarketing lists.

### Why can't I use remarketing for these products?

Because remarketing targets people based on their behaviour on your site, and for health, sexual interests and other sensitive categories Google does not allow that kind of personalised targeting. Customer Match and lookalike segments are restricted for the same reason.

### Can I rename the product to get around it?

Only if the current name is misleading. Rewording a genuinely sensitive product to avoid classification does not change what it is and risks a more serious policy problem. Fix wording that is wrong, and appeal classifications that are wrong.
